While several sporting events due to take place in the UK this weekend face the threat of postponement, there is no question that the fourth and final golf major of 2011 will go ahead, with the best players in the world descending on the Atlanta Athletic Club for the PGA Championship.

It is hard to remember a time when the sport was blessed with so many fantastic players and that includes Rory McIlroy, who should really have the US Masters to his name as well as the US Open, although the northern Irishman can still double his major count in Georgia and is available at 11/1 with Betfred to claim victory.

McIlroy demonstrated at Congressional Club and Augusta that he can perform at a higher level than his competitors although he is not the form horse in the tournament. Adam Scott was the player head and shoulders above everyone in the Bridgestone Invitational and the Australian can be backed at 25/1 (Ladbrokes – £50 free bets).

Scott has Steve Williams on the bag, with Tiger Woods’ former caddie causing controversy by describing the Aussie’s win as the best week of his sporting life. Perhaps that will be the motivation that Woods needs to show that he is not finished when it comes to winning major titles and the American is also among the favourites at 25/1 (bet365 – £200 free betting).

Luke Donald is still searching for his first major title, along with Lee Westwood although they continue to be among the favourites for the big tournaments and the chances are that one of these two talented Englishman will get it right on the big occasion eventually. Donald is a 14/1 chance with Paddy Power who are prepared to offer a smidge more (15/1) that Westwood finally fulfils his potential.

Not that you can narrow the winner down to a shortlist of four or five players, with Darren Clarke and Charl Schwartzel showing this year that a big priced runner has every chance of making it a successful four days for the bookmakers. Schwartzel is actually 66/1 (Ladbrokes) to recover the form that saw him wearing the Green Jacket at Augusta just a few months ago.

There has been no American winner of a major this year although you can bet that one or two players from the US will be near the top of the leaderboard come the final round. But simply who do you plump for out of Dustin Johnson (28/1), Phil Mickelson (28/1), Steve Stricker (28/1), Rickie Fowler (33/1), Nick Watney (35/1), Matt Kuchar (45/1), Zach Johnson (50/1), David Toms (55/1), Bubba Watson (60/1), Hunter Mahan (80/1) and Anthony Kim (90/1)!

These guys would clearly make a decent Ryder Cup team in 2012 but whether or not any of them can register an American major victory in 2011 is another matter. There are lots of other betting markets available, including Top American, Make the Cut as well as match betting opportunities.
