Investec Oaks betting preview
Secret Gesture is likely to go off as favourite for Friday’s Oaks, with the filly currently trading at odds of 9/4 and is sure to be well supported in the lead-up to the race.
Trainer Ralph Beckett is expecting a big run from a horse that claimed a facile victory in the Oaks Trial Stakes earlier in May, beating Miss You Too by ten lengths and she will surely take some beating this time around. However, some would argue that Secret Gesture beat a weak field on that day, with four of the six rivals being maidens.
However, it’s a competitive renewal and there’s a certain Aidan O’Brien who has two lively contenders in the Oaks including Moth. The fact that his son has opted to ride this horse over Say illustrates that the former has a stronger chance of victory, having run into third place on her last outing.
Moth can be backed at 7/2 and is rated second behind Secret Gesture after finishing third in the 1000 Guineas behind Sky Lantern and Just The Judge. The fact that the horse has shown Group One form is a positive, not to mention the fact that the extra half mile should also suit.
Liber Nauticus is unbeaten for Sir Michael Stoute and merits plenty of respect in this race, although perhaps the ground isn’t necessarily in favour of a horse that won the Musidora Stakes at York earlier this month.
Banoffee is fourth in the betting and her latest victory was in the Chester Vase, with the Hughie Morrison horse touching off Gertrude Versed in her latest outing. It’s not clear why there’s such a big gulf in prices between these two horses.
Talent is the other horse that merits attention, with Ralph Beckett also saddling this horse and perhaps it will his second string that claims the spoils here. At 16/1, Richard Hughes might yet steer her into a place or even victory.
