Arsenal have had a miserable start to the season and it hasn’t been made any easier by the fact that Thomas Vermaelen and Jack Wilshere have sustained injuries which means they will be sidelined for several weeks to come.
In the case of Vermaelen, there has been no official word from Arsenal FC with regard to how long the Belgian would be missing for, although the player’s father has confirmed that the 25-year-old had surgery for an Achilles injury on Monday and could be out for up to six weeks.
He told Belgian website Sporza: “The doctor in Stockholm, where Thomas was operated on last time too, recognised the problem now.
“He would not take any chances and immediately operated on Thomas. He expects a five to six weeks of unavailability.”
The ex-Ajax player was out for most of last season which prevented the Gunners from making a sustained Premier League title assault, with Arsene Wenger having signed Per Mertesacker before the transfer window shut in the hope of improving defensive matters.
Some of the goals that Arsenal recently conceded at Old Trafford were very poor from a defensive point-of-view and supporters will have to wait a little longer for Vermaelen to be back in action.
