People often have short memories, especially those employed to fill column inches with sensationalist tittle-tattle on a daily basis and the treatment of Arsene Wenger in the tabloids has been deplorable considering how much success the Frenchman has brought to Arsenal.

While Wenger and his team have had a sticky start to the season, the way in which the football club is run should be admired and the Gunners have had no divine right over the past few seasons to qualify for the Champions League every year.

Wenger was backed by chief executive Ivan Gazidis on Tuesday following on from Saturday’s 4-3 defeat at Blackburn and the Arsenal manager has defended his overall record, suggesting that he would like to be in charge for another 14 years.

“Whether I work here for the next ten years for the club or the next day I will give my maximum for the club let others assess the situation. I focus on doing well for the club. And I must tell you something: I’m not bothered at all by all this speculation – at all.

“I am completely focused on doing well. I can understand that people are unhappy and criticise but you know as well as I know people are very quick to go overboard”.
