Alex McLeish recently became the new manager of Aston Villa, although the Scot has been powerless to prevent the sale of Ashley Young to Manchester United for a fee thought to be in the region of £15 million.

Young has made no secret of the fact that he wants to be playing Champions League football at this stage of his career, with the former Watford winger having just broken into the England team and the move to Old Trafford is likely to see him cement a place in the international line-up.

It is thought that Young simply needs to pass a medical with the English champions and he will then take his place in the 25-man squad for the new season, with the signing intensifying speculation that Dimitar Berbatov will be surplus to requirements at Manchester United.

The Red Devils have been keen to splash the cash this summer, with Phil Jones earlier arriving from Blackburn Rovers for £16.5 million and Sir Alex Ferguson will be pleased to see two English players forming part of Manchester United’s future.
