Aston Villa manager confident of keeping Darren Bent

It is only a year since Aston Villa managed to snare Darren Bent from Sunderland for a record fee of £18 million, although there has been plenty of speculation that the England forward could be moving to pastures new this January

Bent has been linked with a move to Liverpool, especially as the Reds are currently without the suspended Luis Suarez, while Andy Carroll has not had the desired impact since his £35 million move from Newcastle.

However, Alex McLeish has dismissed suggestions that Villa would even consider an offer for the player, whose goals helped the Midlands club stay in the Premier League last season.

McLeish said: “We’ve not heard a thing from Liverpool. I’m aware of the speculation.

“But there has been no contact with this club and I think you’ve had three parties telling you that. But, even if there was contact, we would not entertain that (selling Bent).

“We wouldn’t want to entertain selling our top scorer of last season. He is a prolific marksman.”

Bent has only scored seven goals this season, although he is practically certain to be among the England squad that travel to Poland and Ukraine for Euro 2012. His latest goal came at Stamford Bridge recently when Aston Villa beat Chelsea 3-1.
