There are sure to be a number of shocks in the Carling Cup this week and the AMEX Stadium could play host to one of them, with Brighton having enjoyed a bright start to life in the Championship.
Gus Poyet’s team have won three and drawn one of their opening four fixtures, with a Kevin Phillips late equaliser denting the Seagulls’ 100% start to the season, although Albion are scoring goals for fun and could take advantage of a Sunderland team likely to be changed after Saturday’s Tyne-Wear derby.
Brighton can be backed at 2/1 (William Hill – £25 free bet) to claim victory on Tuesday night, with the team scoring an average of two goals per game at the moment and Craig Mackail-Smith is likely to lead the line for the home team.
The former Peterborough striker is 11/2 (bet365 – £200 free betting) to score the first goal of the game, while Ashley Barnes is also enjoying a great start to the campaign and he can be backed at 13/2 (Coral) to break the deadlock.
Sunderland are the 8/5 favourites to win the match and they can oblige at those odds if Steve Bruce decides to select a strong team for the long journey south. Much depends on team selection, although perhaps Asamoah Gyan (11/2 Paddy Power) will be played in attack.
Perhaps it will be an opportunity for Connor Wickham to shine after the youngster’s £8.1 million move from Ipswich Town in the summer and Paddy Power offer 9/1 that he gets the visitors off and running.
