Chelsea have been unconvincing in their Premier League matches so far, with the Blues being held to a goalless draw at Stoke before struggling to overturn a 1-0 deficit against West Brom, with Andre Villas-Boas’ team securing a late winner to triumph 2-1.
It is clear that the team lack a player to unlock the increasingly tight defences that face them every week and that is why Chelsea have successfully pursued the signature of Juan Mata, with the midfielder on the verge of completing a transfer from Valencia.
The 23-year-old is a fully-fledged Spanish international who helped the Under-21 team win the European Championship this summer and Valencia issued a statement on their website which didn’t include a fee but suggested the deal was very likely to take place.
A statement on the Valencia website read: “Valencia Football Club has reached an agreement in principle with Chelsea FC for the transfer of the player Juan Manuel Mata. The agreement is subject to the relevant medical tests.”
It should mean that Tottenham retain the services of Luka Modric, who has been the subject of summer bids from Chelsea and it is clear that the Croatian has been very interested in switching to Stamford Bridge.
