Liverpool’s midfield department was trimmed on transfer deadline day after Joe Cole went to Lille on loan, while Raul Meireles switched to Chelsea after handing in a late request to leave Anfield.
Meireles was one of the outstanding performers for the Reds last season, although the Portuguese player will now be regarded in a dim light by Liverpool supporters after leaving the Merseyside club to join one of the club’s Premier League clubs.
It is a situation that Meireles is keen to explain in time, with the 28-year-old hinting that events conspired to see him arrive at Stamford Bridge for £10 million.
“These are things that happen in football. I can only say good things about Liverpool, it was a fantastic year,” Meireles told RTPN.
“People think I am a Judas and that it was because of the money. It was not because of that, I will explain it later, things are still fresh.
“It all happened very fast. I am not the only one to blame for my exit from Liverpool, but I will never stop loving the club and I have great friends there.”
One factor that determined Meireles chose Chelsea was the fact that compatriot Andre Villas-Boas is manager at the west London club, with the player adding: “I was very happy with his interest in my signature. The most important thing is to give my all every time and try to help Chelsea win titles.”
