After a successful summer which saw England whitewash India in the Test series before triumphing in the One Day series, the tables are now turned with Alastair Cook’s side heading out to India for a five-game ODI showdown.
First up is Friday’s match in Hyderabad, with the bookmakers struggling to split the two teams, noting England’s confidence levels but also the fact that India are world champions in this format of the game.
MS Dhoni’s team are 4/5 (bet365 – £200 free bets) and have a point to prove after a shambolic summer which saw the team heavily criticised on their return to the homeland. Supporters certainly didn’t expect to see a whitewash a big improvement is required.
However, England are currently blessed with quality and can be backed at 11/10 (William Hill – £25 free betting) to make a winning start to the series, with several players competing for places including Jonathan Trott.
“For an older guy of the team it’s a good thing to see that strength in depth,” he said. “It spurs you on to try to push yourself and become even better. I feel like I’ve been pretty successful over the last couple of years, but, by no means, like I’ve done enough to deserve to secure my spot.”
Trott is 7/2 to be Top Batsman in this match, with captain Cook on offer at the same odds and Kevin Pietersen available to back at 4/1.
Meanwhile, there is no Sachin Tendulkar for the Indians, who instead have a youthful team to try and silence the critics.
