There has been everything to like about the horse’s form to date, with seven wins coming from seven outings and the latest of these saw the three-year-old oblige at 11/8 favourite to win the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
Trainer Jim Bolger is really pleased with the preparation that has been done for the race, describing his previous performance as ‘spectacular’.
He said: “I’m very happy with him. He has come out of the Guineas very well. His performance in the Guineas was spectacular; I think that’s recognised by everybody. He has been thriving ever since. I’d say he’s eating a little more than he was before the Guineas, so he’s come out of it really well, and I’ve no doubt he has improved”.
Where does the challenge come from? Battle of Marengo runs for Aidan O’Brien and the trainer has five runners in the Derby, although this horse probably represents his best chance of victory. The latest win came at Leopardstown against a weak field, although there appears to be plenty of market confidence behind this horse.
Ocovango is third favourite to win this classic race and has impressive credentials following three straight wins at Saint-Cloud in France. Ted Voute, racing and bloodstock manager for the horses owner, Prince Faisal, is pleased that the horse is ‘coming under the radar’.
“We appear to be coming in under the radar, which is just how we like it. He’ll have a quiet time and will come to England later in the week with a companion he always travels with.
“All is well, and we are slowly getting more and more excited. It’s very special to get a horse good enough to run in the Derby – it’s what we aim for in our business.”
Ruler Of The World is an 8/1 shot and will have the talented Ryan Moore aboard, having claimed the MBNA Chester Vase earlier this month, with the horse likely to act well on good ground.
