Alan Pardew is cursing the day that somebody suggested to Joey Barton that he might want to check out the latest social networking craze.
That’s because Barton has effectively used his Twitter feed to talk himself out of the squad at Newcastle United thanks his criticism of the direction that the Tyneside club is heading, with the midfielder having now been told he can leave St James’ Park.
Not that the situation isn’t reversible according to Pardew, who in Thursday’s press conference intimated that there might still be a way back for the controversial midfielder despite interest from Stoke City and West Ham.
“I’ve never closed the door on anyone and I’m not closing the door on Joey,” he said. “He trained with the development team today and, who knows, he may train with the first team soon.
“It’s a situation I didn’t envisage being in,” he added. “Joey is a great player and you want great players in your team. It’s very important as a football club that you are all pulling in the same direction – at this moment of time where Joey is not pulling in the same direction.”
Barton has taken to tweeting famous quotes on a daily basis, the latest of which came from Benjamin Disraeli.
