The July meeting at Newmarket is under way and the jewel in the crown is the Darley July Cup which takes place on Saturday at 3.35pm.
There is over £200,000 available in prize money for the winner and it is Delegator who is shaping up to be the race favourite, with Ladbrokes (£30 free bet) offering 4/1 that the Godolphin horse is steered home by Frankie Dettori.
The horse ran impressively in the Duke of York Stakes two months ago where backers were rewarded at 5/1 and it is clear that this is a horse that acts best over six furlongs. Delegator does not want the rain to fall at Newmarket and the going could yet become soft if the showers materialise.
Star Witness is a horse that many of us will be familiar with after the New Zealand raider ran twice at Royal Ascot in June, finishing second in the King’s Stand Stakes before third place in the Jubilee Stakes. Can Danny O’Brien’s wonder horse come up trumps? Paddy Power (£100 free betting) have 13/2 available.
Elzaam will be ridden by the experienced Richard Hills and the three-year-old can be backed at 6/1 with bet365 (£200 free bets), having finished a head behind Star Witness at Ascot, following on from a comfortable win at Newbury.
Bated Breath is another one for the shortlist, coming home just behind Star Witness and Elzaam in the same race and it could be a three-way tussle for the line again if Royal Ascot acts as any yardstick.
