League 2 betting preview and free bets
It’s fair to say that the bookies don’t have a clue when it comes to League Two this season. Twelve months ago, there was a concerted gamble on Notts County which eventually landed the spoils as the Magpies got to the line first. However, over half of the 24 teams in the division are trading at under 20/1 on the outright market and this looks like being a wide open competition as a result.
It’s fair to say that the standard of football between League Two and the Blue Square Premier is not much different at all, which suggests that Stevenage Borough could be a team worth backing next season. Indeed, William Hill free bet go as short as 12/1 that the Hertfordshire club achieve back-to-back titles this season, although you can currently get 16/1 with bet365 free bets about Graham Westley’s team, who stormed the Blue Square Premier last term.
As always, the teams relegated from League One last season feature near the top of the betting market and that includes Gillingham (9/1 Blue Square bookmaker) and Wycombe Wanderers (12/1 totesport bookies). However, it’s often better to look at progressive teams and it was Rotherham who came closest to promotion in May when they lost to Dagenham and Redbridge in the play-offs. The Millers should feature in the top six again this term and are 12/1 (Victor Chandler online betting) to win League Two.
Despite finishing fourteenth in the division last season, the bookies are expecting Bradford City to be in contention at the top this time around. The Bantams are 10/1 (Coral sports betting) to finish ahead of the other 23 teams and Peter Taylor has achieved similar success in the past with clubs like Wycombe and Brighton. However, this is not a club with much money and there’s even talk of the manager forming part of an England coaching team!
Better still might be to look at the other promoted team from the Blue Square Premier last season, namely Oxford United, who recently impressed Leicester City manager Paulo Sousa as the teams played out a 1-1 draw. The U’s are on offer at 16/1 (Victor Chandler) and manager Chris Wilder has suggested that his team will play entertaining attacking football against teams that won’t be as defensive at the Kassam Stadium.
Some of the other teams featuring near the top of the outright market list are Wycombe (12/1 totesport free bets), Chesterfield (14/1 Sky Bef free bet), Northampton (14/1 Ladbrokes betting) and Port Vale (16/1 Victor Chandler). The Valiants had a slow start to the campaign last season, although Micky Adams’ team would have reached the play-offs with a few more goals and he’s one of the best managers at this level.
