Barnsley travel to Elland Road on Saturday and with only seven points separating the two Championship sides this is sure to be a fiercely contested Yorkshire derby.
Both teams are coming into the game on the back of wins. Leeds beat Burnley 2-1 last weekend and are now in fifth place in the table and Barnsley beat local rivals Doncaster 2-0.
The two sides have contested 24 league games at Elland Road with Leeds coming out on top in 11, Barnsley five and eight draws. The home side look likely to field the same team as last weekend, their biggest news being that defender Andy O’Brien allegedly refused to play against Burnley. In the words of manager Simon Grayson, “He won’t play for this football club again as long as I am here.” Which sounds pretty final to us.
However, as O’Brien has only made three Championship appearances for Leeds this season this won’t impact the side too much. Why change a winning formula? Grayson’s side have won five of the last nine, so if you fancy the Whites to keep marching on odds of 8/11 with Ladbrokes (£50 free bets) are sure to tempt you.
Barnsley will provide a stern test, however, and with wins over Doncaster and Hull already this month they will be relishing another Yorkshire derby. They are 9/2 (Blue Square – £25 free betting) to upset their more illustrious neighbours but given their below average form away from home this looks a big ask.
If they are to get anything from the game they will need a big performance from young captain Jacob Butterfield. He is attracting attention from the Premier League and with four goals from midfield he is a good bet at 10/3 (William Hill) to score at some point in the match.
Over 2.5 goals looks good at 8/11 (188bet) and given Elland Road witnessed a huge number of goals last season and averages three per game this, we should have an entertaining derby on our hands.
