The Premier League season starts in less than a fortnight and speculation has intensified as to which four or five players will be first choice when it comes to the Liverpool midfield.

Steven Gerrard is probably Kenny Dalglish’s first name on the team-sheet although the Reds captain will miss the team’s matches in August after news emerged that he has an infection relating to a groin injury.

It means that Charlie Adam should get a chance to shine immediately for his new club after completing a transfer from Blackpool earlier this summer and the former Rangers midfielder is relishing the competition for places.

Adam told the Liverpool website: “I can’t wait to get started. Liverpool have many talented midfielders but I think the competition for places will be good for the club. I thrive on that type of challenge and I’m sure the other lads will as well.

“I want to learn and there are some of the best players in the world at this club, so if I can learn from them I am going to improve as a player. That is my aim.”

Gerrard has been ruled out of Liverpool’s three Premier League matches in August where the team will play Sunderland, Arsenal and Bolton Wanderers.
