Sir Alex Ferguson will be wondering whether he smashed a mirror or walked under a ladder last week, with the Manchester United manager having lost three defenders to injury in the past few days, something which leaves the champions stretched to breaking point at this early stage of the season.

Rio Ferdinand and Rafael da Silva have already been ruled out of Monday’s game against Tottenham Hotspur and it now appears that Nemanja Vidic will be joining them in the stands until the end of September, with the Serbian incurring a calf injury which will keep him on the sidelines for over a month according to Ferguson.

“Vidic has a calf muscle injury which means he will be four to five weeks. It is difficult to say with calves but it is longer than we thought,” Ferguson said.

“Rio is not as bad as we thought so he could be ready for our game against Arsenal. I don’t think he’ll be ready for Monday but it is amazing how it can change in a few days.”

Indeed, Ferdinand was originally ruled out for four weeks although it appears the England international should be back within the next fortnight.
