Manchester United might have won the Premier League and reached the final of the Champions League last season, although Sir Alex Ferguson has wasted little time in making a quality signing to help his team challenge on all fronts next term.
Phil Jones has impressed for Blackburn ever since he made his debut for the Lancashire club and it appears that the Red Devils have beaten Liverpool to the signature of the versatile defender, with the transfer fee expected to be roughly £16 million.
Jones is only 19 and yet he has displayed remarkable maturity in his performances for Rovers, with the player signing a five-year-deal at Ewood Park last February which meant that any successful bidder would have to stump up £16 million for the player.
Although Jones might fall behind Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Chris Smalling in the pecking order, it would be no great surprise to see him operating as a defensive midfielder.
Wayne Rooney was pleased with the signing, writing on Twitter: “Phil Jones is a good young English player. One of the toughest defenders I played against last season. Can play midfield too.”
