Manchester United have broken the £50 million barrier with their summer spending, recruiting David de Gea, Phil Jones and Ashley Young to bolster the defence and midfield respectively.

There has been some speculation that Sir Alex Ferguson may move for Wesley Sneijder or even Joey Barton this summer, although the Red Devils manager is not expecting any new squad additions to be made between now and the start of the season.

“We lost five players in their 30s this summer” said Fergsuon. “That helped finance the three younger players – Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David de Gea – I have brought to the club.

“At this moment, I can’t see another addition. The type of player we might have been looking for is not available. I am happy with the players I have got at this moment in time.”

Meanwhile, Ferguson revealed that he is looking forward’s to United’s official curtain-raiser when they take on Manchester City in the Community Shield, a match which is likely to be far more than a routine friendly.

“It is not a normal Community Shield for Manchester United,” said Ferguson. “It is addressing our noisy neighbours again. It will be an interesting match.”
