Nottingham Forest are having a dreadful season so far and the campaign hit a new low on Saturday when Steve McClaren’s side were beaten by a Derby County side that played the entire match with ten men.
McClaren described the defeat at home to their arch-rivals as a shock and the Tricky Trees have an immediate opportunity to bounce back when they face Premier League opposition in the Carling Cup, having narrowly beaten Notts County in the previous round.
Forest are the 21/10 outsiders (Betfred – £50 free bets) and it is hard to feel too confident about their chances considering their recent form, with Ishmael Miller (7/1 Ladbrokes – £50 free betting) one of the few players to come away with any credit.
Newcastle United lost at the City Ground two seasons ago on the way to winning the Championship, although the Magpies have now solidified their position in the English top flight and are unbeaten so far this campaign.
Alan Pardew is likely to rest a few players for this clash, although bet365 (£200 free betting) offer odds of 11/8 about an away win and the visitors might take advantage of a Forest team suffering from low morale, something which would add more pressure to McClaren.
Leon Best is proving to be a classy acquisition for the Magpies, with the manager hoping that he will forge a good understanding with Demba Ba, while Gabriel Obertan has also been looking lively.
