There will be plenty of players hoping to catch the eye of Fabio Capello this season, with Euro 2012 less than a year away and places up for grabs in the 23-man squad that will travel to Poland and Ukraine next summer – providing that England qualify.

A couple of bookmakers have created a Top English Goalscorer market ahead of the new Premier League season, with Wayne Rooney available at odds of 3/1 (William Hill – £25 free bets) to outscore his compatriots and the Manchester United forward has been impressive during his team’s pre-season tour of America.

It was Darren Bent that finished top of the English scoring charts last term and the Aston Villa striker should fill his boots again next season, with 9/2 available (Paddy Power – £100 free betting) that he finishes top of the scoring charts. With Ashley Young having departed, we should expect Bent to assume penalty duties for the Villans.

Meanwhile, it is worth noting that the player that finished second behind Bent last season was DJ Campbell and QPR’s latest signing is available at a stonking 50/1 (Paddy Power) to be the highest-scoring Englishman, a price that could tempt many to place an each-way bet. After all, Campbell fired 13 home last term for a Blackpool team that were ultimately relegated.

Andy Carroll also managed 13 for Newcastle and Liverpool last season and missed a sizeable chunk of the season through injury, with the striker 10/1 with Paddy Power, while Reds captain Steven Gerrard is a 25/1 chance (William Hill) and will miss the first few weeks of the season with an injury.

Frank Lampard (14/1 Paddy Power) was also injured for much of the last campaign and it would appear that the Chelsea midfielder will play deeper for his team this season, although Daniel Sturridge (20/1) could get plenty of game time for the Blues or even be loaned out to another club to fill his boots.

Tottenham Hotspur have a couple of English forwards who have a realistic chance of making the England squad for Euro 2012 and Jermain Defoe will simply be hoping that Harry Redknapp plays him for a run of games. Defoe is a 14/1 chance, with Peter Crouch on offer at 25/1 with Hills.

Other players that could be in the running for Top English scorer are Bobby Zamora (22/1 Paddy Power), Theo Walcott (22/1) and Jermaine Beckford (28/1). Beckford finished with a flourish for Everton last season which included an amazing solo goal against Chelsea and perhaps he will regularly be among the goals after settling into life in the Premier League.
