Premier League Top Goalscorer latest odds, news and free bets

We have now reached the middle of January and Robin Van Persie has managed to avoid sustaining an injury which has allowed the Dutchman to ride high at the top of the scoring charts

Van Persie has missed chunks of previous campaigns thanks to various ailments, although there have been no such problems for the Arsenal striker this term and that has allowed him to plunder 18 goals – three more than his nearest rival.

It has led some bookmakers to quote the forward at odds-on for the Golden Boot although Paddy Power (£100 free bets) seem mindful that there’s a fair chunk of the season remaining and odds of 11/10 are available about him topping the charts come May.

Van Persie backers will be pleased to see that Demba Ba is the Dutchman’s nearest challenger and the Newcastle star is currently representing Senegal in the African Cup of Nations, something which will see him out of action for a few more weeks.

Ba has been a revelation for the Magpies this season, despite being an erratic performer for West Ham last season, with the striker currently on 15 goals and he can be backed at 12/1 (Ladbrokes – £50 free betting) to be the Premier League Top Goalscorer come the end of the season.

The other two players in the mix have been favourites for the Golden Boot at various times this season, although neither Wayne Rooney or Sergio Aguero have managed to sustain their early campaign scoring rate.

Rooney has suffered a dip in form and a fall-out with the manager this season, with his odds now out to 11/2 and the Manchester United man sits five goals behind Van Persie going into Sunday’s match at the Emirates Stadium.

Meanwhile, Aguero is probably worth considering at 11/4 considering that he should have collected a brace against Wigan on Monday and is only a hat-trick away from being back on contention.

With Yakubu now suspended for Blackburn and Edin Dzeko likely to be left out more than selected, it is hard to see beyond the leading quartet when it comes to Top Goalscorer, with Adebayor, Fletcher, Sturridge and Lampard all needing one more goal to hit double figures for the season.
