Sunderland v Manchester City Betting Guide

Manchester City travel to Sunderland, looking for only their second win on the road

Gus Poyet will be looking for his third victory since taking over the Black Cats, with the home team sitting five points adrift from safety in 19th position in the table.

The Capital One Cup midweek win over Southampton was against a second-string team, and Poyet will be hoping the 2-1 victory should act as a confidence boost, especially following the triumph in the Tyne-Wear derby. Sunderland will be confident of a third consecutive home win.

Bet365 have a home win priced at 8/1 in front of the Sky Sports cameras, with Sunderland up against a visiting side who are amongst the top contenders and favourites to win the Premier League title, with Pellegrini’s boys having been scoring prolifically this season.

City hit the back of the net seven times against Norwich at the weekend before their 5-2 Champions League mauling of CSKA Moscow, thus booking their last-sixteen place. The Citizens are now able to concentrate on domestic affairs, and to closing the gap with Arsenal, currently at 6 points.

The visitors are offered at 2/5 with Ladbrokes to win this encounter, however they have only managed a solitary win on their travels so their away record is far from pretty.

The 2-1 away defeat at Chelsea was a tad unfortunate, although there was certainly an element of misfortune involved there. Pellegrini will be careful with his team selection with Sergio Aguero the favoured first goalscorer with Paddy Power offering 7/2 for such an event. Aguero has amassed 12 goals in 9 games, an amazing feat, and the Argentine is offered at 4/5 to score anytime.

Sunderland will be only too aware of the Aguero threat, and also that of his strike partner Alvaro Negrado. Poyet will be attempting to make his side difficult to beat, and a draw looks to be a good bet at 4/1.

Discipline will be the key word, considering Sunderland were down to nine men prior to half-time at Hull City at the weekend. There should be plenty of spirit from the home side however, but the quality from City will likely prove too much, and it’s hard to see any result other than an away win. A 2-0 scoreline for the visitors can be backed at 7/1 with a 1-0 win 15/2.
